How it works
Pro rata salary = full-time salary × your weekly hours ÷ full-time weekly hours.
A worked example
A £40,000 full-time salary becomes £24,000 at 22.5 hours when full time is 37.5 hours.
What to keep in mind
Assumes pay is proportional to contracted weekly hours. Benefits, allowances, paid weeks and employer policies can affect the actual offer.
How to calculate a pro rata salary
Divide the part-time weekly hours by the full-time weekly hours, then multiply that fraction by the full-time annual salary. For example, working 22.5 hours where full time is 37.5 hours means working 60% of full-time hours, so the pro rata salary is 60% of the advertised salary.
Understanding monthly and weekly pro rata pay
The calculator divides annual pro rata pay by 12 for a monthly figure and by 52 for a weekly figure. These are gross estimates before Income Tax, National Insurance, pension contributions and other deductions.
Frequently asked questions
Does pro rata change my hourly rate?
No. A straight pro-rata calculation preserves the same implied hourly rate and reduces annual pay in proportion to hours.
How is monthly pro rata pay calculated?
The annual pro rata salary is divided by 12. Actual payslips can vary when an employer uses a different pay schedule or applies deductions.
Does the result include tax and pension deductions?
No. The result is gross pay. Use the take-home pay calculator to explore UK Income Tax and National Insurance separately.
