BEHIND THE NUMBERS

How it works

Convert each time to minutes after midnight and subtract. Add 1,440 minutes when the end is on the next day.

A worked example

09:00 to 17:30 on the same day is 8 hours 30 minutes, or 8.5 hours.

What to keep in mind

Clock-time duration only. Excludes dates, time zones and daylight-saving changes. Supports same-day or next-day intervals.

Calculate the hours between two times

The calculator converts both clock times into minutes after midnight and subtracts the start from the end. It then shows the duration as hours and minutes and as decimal hours, which can be useful for timesheets.

Working out an overnight time duration

Choose Next day when the end time falls after midnight. For example, a shift from 22:00 to 06:00 lasts 8 hours. Use Same day for intervals that begin and end before midnight.

Frequently asked questions

How do I count an overnight shift?

Select “Next day” for the end day. For example, 22:00 to 06:00 is eight hours.

What are decimal hours?

Decimal hours express minutes as a fraction of an hour. For example, 8 hours 30 minutes is 8.5 hours.

Does the calculator include breaks?

No. It measures the full interval between the two times. Subtract unpaid or other breaks separately.

Results use the assumptions above. Check critical measurements and dates independently.
